CHRONORAMA, Trésors photographiques du 20ème siècle

Palazzo Grassi, Venise

12 March 2023 – 7 January 2024

Bringing together the newly acquired Condé Nast archives, CHRONORAMA offered one of the most ambitious surveys of twentieth-century photography in recent years. Within this international panorama, Roger Schall's photographs were presented alongside those of the century's leading image-makers, reaffirming his place in the visual history of modern photography.

Presented at Palazzo Grassi in Venice, CHRONORAMA, Trésors photographiques du 20ème siècle was the first exhibition dedicated to the Condé Nast photographic holdings acquired by the Pinault Collection. Curated by Matthieu Humery, it brought together 407 works by more than 150 international photographers, tracing the evolution of twentieth-century photography.

Roger Schall's photographs were selected from the Condé Nast Collection for its inaugural public presentation following the acquisition of the archives by the Pinault Collection. Displayed alongside works by Edward Steichen, Horst P. Horst, Cecil Beaton, Lee Miller, André Kertész and many other leading photographers, they highlighted Schall's contribution to Vogue during the 1930s within a broader narrative exploring fashion, portraiture, photojournalism and visual culture.

For Roger Schall, CHRONORAMA represented an important institutional recognition. By placing his work within one of the most significant photographic collections assembled in recent years, the exhibition reaffirmed his contribution to twentieth-century photography while marking the first public presentation of photographs preserved in the Condé Nast archives.
