Schall Collection

Aboard Normandie(89)

Between 1934 and 1937, Roger Schall followed Normandie from her construction in Saint-Nazaire to her legendary Atlantic crossings. Commissioned by VU magazine and the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique for his distinctly modern photographic style, he documented what became the ultimate expression of French Art Deco and modernity. From the monumental scale of the ship to the elegance of life on board, his photographs form one of the richest visual testimonies to the golden age of transatlantic travel.
