A dialogue with the pioneers of subjective photography.
The Museum Folkwang preserves fifty-six vintage prints by Roger Schall from the collection of Otto Steinert, one of the most influential figures in post-war European photography. Photographer, educator and curator, Steinert organised the landmark Subjektive Fotografie exhibitions in Saarbrücken during the 1950s, helping to redefine photography as an autonomous artistic medium. His personal collection later became one of the foundations of the Museum Folkwang's Department of Photography.
The presence of Roger Schall's photographs within the Steinert Collection reflects the recognition his work received beyond France and places him in dialogue with many of the leading photographers who shaped the history of modern European photography. Today, these fifty-six vintage prints form part of one of Europe's foremost museum collections dedicated to the photographic medium, reinforcing Roger Schall's enduring place within the international history of photography.
