After decades of exhibitions organised by museums, galleries and institutions, Ombre & Lumière marked the beginning of a new chapter: the first exhibition conceived and presented by Schall Collection, establishing a long-term commitment to preserving and sharing Roger Schall's photographic legacy.
Presented at Galerie DUREV in November 2023, Ombre & Lumière was the first exhibition conceived and organised by Schall Collection. More than a presentation of photographs, it established the editorial vision of the Estate: to preserve Roger Schall's archive, produce museum-quality prints and foster renewed recognition of his work through exhibitions, publications and institutional collaborations.
Conceived around the interplay of shadow and light that defines much of Roger Schall's photography, the exhibition explored one of the most distinctive aspects of his visual language. Through fifty carefully selected photographs, Ombre & Lumière revealed how refined tonalities, carefully balanced compositions and dramatic contrasts shaped Schall's remarkably modern vision. Whether photographing the streets of Paris, artists' studios, architecture or fashion, he transformed light into a narrative element, shaping atmosphere as much as form.
As the inaugural exhibition of Schall Collection, Ombre & Lumière set the direction for the projects that followed—from museum exhibitions and publications to international collaborations—affirming the Estate's long-term commitment to preserving, studying and promoting Roger Schall's photographic legacy.
