Roger Schall photographed Paris where it unfolded: in its streets, cafés, markets and everyday encounters. In 2005, 64 of these images returned to the rhythm of the city, presented on a monumental scale in one of its busiest public spaces.
Presented at Italie 2 in Paris in 2005, Paris vu par Roger Schall brought together 64 large-format prints produced by the Dupon laboratory. Conceived by Cécile Schall, the photographer’s granddaughter, it marked the first exhibition she developed in its entirety around Roger Schall’s work and an important new chapter in the transmission of his photographic legacy.
Its setting was central to the project. By presenting the photographs within a major shopping centre rather than a conventional museum or gallery, the exhibition returned Schall’s images of Paris to a space shaped by movement, encounters and daily life. The city he had observed across several decades was once again placed before a broad Parisian public.
Following the centenary presentation of his work at Visa pour l’Image in 2004, the exhibition formed part of a renewed effort to bring Roger Schall’s archive back into public view. Today, it stands as an early milestone in the family-led rediscovery and preservation of Roger Schall’s photographic legacy.
