With his first exhibition presented by Duncan Miller Gallery in Los Angeles, Roger Schall’s work entered a new stage of international rediscovery. Following the creation of Schall Collection in Paris, this American presentation extended the Estate’s mission beyond France and introduced his photographic legacy to a new audience of collectors and photography enthusiasts.
Presented from 25 January to 16 March 2024, Roger Schall was a monographic exhibition at Duncan Miller Gallery in Los Angeles. The gallery’s official programme introduced Schall through the breadth of his career, from the creation of the Schall Frères agency and his international work for Vogue, Vu, Life, Picture Post and Match to his portraits of leading figures such as Henri Matisse, Coco Chanel, Jean Cocteau and Colette.
Although conceived on an intimate scale, the exhibition represented an important step in the renewed visibility of his work. Less than a year after Schall Collection’s first exhibition in Paris, the presentation in Los Angeles brought a distinctly French photographic legacy into the American gallery landscape and demonstrated its resonance beyond its original historical and geographical context.
The exhibition marked the first international extension of the programme initiated by the Estate. By establishing a presence in the United States, it confirmed that the reappraisal of Roger Schall’s oeuvre was no longer confined to France, but was beginning to reach an international network of galleries, collectors and audiences.
