Un Précurseur

Galerie Durev, Paris

5–11 November 2024

Conceived alongside the publication of the first monograph devoted to Roger Schall, Un Précurseur marked an important stage in the reassessment of his work. For the first time, an exhibition and a major publication brought together the different dimensions of his career within a single historical narrative.

Presented at Galerie DUREV during Paris Photo week and as part of Photo Days, Roger Schall: Un Précurseur brought together fifty photographs selected from the 175 images reproduced in the accompanying monographic publication. The exhibition offered a broad reading of an oeuvre spanning photojournalism, fashion, portraiture, modern life and the emergence of humanist photography.

Published by Le Bec en l’air, Roger Schall, un précurseur was the first monographic volume dedicated to the photographer. Drawing on his archive of nearly 80,000 images and contributions from several specialists, the book sought to restore the scope and historical coherence of a career long dispersed across illustrated magazines, institutional collections and family archives.

The exhibition therefore represented more than a new presentation of the Estate’s holdings. By bringing the photographs into dialogue with the first substantial publication on his work, it provided a lasting framework through which Roger Schall could be reconsidered within twentieth-century photographic history.
